The Vampire Patrons is a comedic look into the dysfunctional lives of four vampires, all siblings, living in a modern-day world where vampires, werewolves, the undead, and human beings work and live side by side, tolerating each other as best they can. But all is not what it seems when a series of brutal maulings grips the city and the four find themselves piecing together a murder mystery over their weekly dinners together at a second-rate diner - that is, when they're not busy arguing amongst themselves.

The Vampire Patrons is a short novella. At about 100 pages, it took me an hour and a half to read. I was a little confused at first about The Blood Laws, such as what they were and how they worked. It turns out, they are explained in the middle of the book, and have no relevance to the story whatsoever. I think it would have made a lot more sense to put in a couple sentences about the laws in the beginning, instead of an interlude in the middle of the story. Freddie was my favorite character. His costumes and attitude were quite entertaining and made me laugh several times. There were a couple funny moments in the book, such as when the main character was pulling pranks at the office. The epilogue of the novella left me thoroughly confused. The murderer was never figured out, even though the reader was certain who it was at the end of the story. At this time, it is not clear if the author is going to create a sequel to The Vampire Patrons. If he does create a sequel, my rating of the novella will probably change. I recommend The Vampire Patrons to someone with a couple hours to kill.

I don't read a a lot of fiction books (especially vampire books) but I thoroughly enjoyed reading "The Vampire Patrons." So much so in fact that I nearly read the entire book in one night. One of the reasons I don't like most fiction books is that the dialogue is generally boring, cliche and predictable. What I loved about the Vampire Patrons was that the dialogue was unpredictable, clever and witty. I also love the quirky characters. One in particular really made me laugh but you'll have to read it to find out which one. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to check out for a couple of hours and have a few good laughs. After all, a vampire, comedy legal thriller? What more can you ask for?
"The most mistaken belief is something far more disturbing, the notion that we can't appreciate a good joke."

What do a wannabe comedian, a lawyer a cop and their crazy brother have in common? They're all 20th Century vampires and this book is but a small part of their very normal, very funny lives.

Meant to be a satire/parody The Vampire Patrons written by Robert Gruett definitely did the trick. A welcome break from the typical vampire novels that are so common, this novella is steeped in sarcasm and was funny mystery that was very easy to read. The only thing that I found slightly disappointing was that the end wasn't nearly as funny as the beginning. But that doesn't mean I lost interest in it. Not even close.

I can't wait to read more from Mr. Gruett. Probably.

Imagine picking up a small tome, a novella if you will, after taking notice to its titillating name, The Vampire Patrons. Intrigued, you look inside to see that the book is quickly described as a vampire comedy, legal thriller. You've got to be kidding! But that's the point. Robert Gruett is kidding, sort of...his short novel is part comedy, mystery, and fantasy all rolled into one. And it works quite well.

Three sibling vampires, all upstanding citizens in a world where vampires and humans co-exist (apparently along with zombies), meet weekly at Barlowe's Restaurant. They routinely chat, verbally joust, and are attended to by Larry, a werewolf, who seems to know exactly what his patrons need for their dining pleasure.

Annie, the only female in the group, is a cop trying to solve a series of grisly murders. Freddie has a curious image problem, while Jacob is a respected lawyer. The narrator is an aspiring stand-up comedian who must settle for doing office work. Each week they become increasingly drawn into trying to solve the perplexing crime. Clever conversation and Holmes-like speculation punctuate their sibling rivalries as the plot thickens with each passing week. Larry, not immune to his patron's dilemma, joins the fray while secretly yearning for Annie's affections.

The wit is dry, the dialogue fun, and the element of surprise makes for a fitting end. Robert Gruett has done the unthinkable, penning a highly "comic vampire legal thriller" that makes one happy to have picked up such an unusual book at all.
